Stand of Red pine

Here is a stand of Michigan Red pine (Pinus resinosa) that I have previously marked for harvesting.  This will be the third time that this particular plantation has been thinned. The first thinning was a 1/3 row harvest where every 3rd row was harvested, leaving 2/3 of the trees intact. Subsequent thinnings like this one are based on retaining an appropriate density of the best formed timber trees. The orange marks on the trees designate "cut". The remainder of the tree will continue to grow for another decade when the next harvest is scheduled to take place.
