Northern hardwoods-No regeneration

One of the functions of how much light reaches the hardwood forest floor is the abiilty for regeneration to occur. As you can see in this photo, there is a lack of sapling sized trees within this stand. The reason for this is the fact that there is not enough light to allow the small seedlings to generate to sapling size and then later into pole and sawtimber sizes as the forest grows.  Careful thinning to optimal densities of the finest formed trees retained in the forest at proper intervals will allow for the repoduction and maintenance of all size classes in the hardwood stands.
