Grass stage

This clump of green I am showing in my hand is not grass, but the "grass stage" (seedling) of a Longleaf pine tree (Pinus palustris).  Longleaf pine is a species confined to the Southern 1/3 of the U.S.  The wood from this tree and several others is called "yellow pine".  It doesn't grow as fast as the the other species of trees in the yellow pine category, but it is very fire resistant and has a tendency to grow straighter with higher consistency than the the other yellow pine species.  This tendency can be a financial advantage over the other yellow pines in the percentage of high value wood products (knot free poles) obtained from the trees when compared to its competitors.
